Learning through experience
When children build, sort, pretend, sing, draw and play with others, they practise a wide range of emerging skills. A block-building activity can invite counting, planning, balance and teamwork. Pretend play can encourage language, imagination and perspective-taking.
What parents can encourage
- Offer open-ended materials such as blocks, paper and crayons.
- Read picture books and invite children to tell the story in their own words.
- Make time for outdoor movement and safe exploration.
- Join in sometimes, while allowing children to lead their play.
Every child develops at their own pace. Choose activities that are safe, enjoyable and suited to the child's age and interests.
