Simple Activities That Build Early Language Skills

Small everyday moments can create rich opportunities for children to listen, speak, describe and ask questions.

Five easy ideas

  1. Picture talk: Look at a picture book and talk about what you notice.
  2. Story retelling: Invite your child to describe what happened first, next and last.
  3. Rhymes and songs: Enjoy rhythm, repetition and playful sounds together.
  4. Everyday narration: Talk about cooking, shopping, gardening and other familiar routines.
  5. Question time: Ask open questions and give children time to respond.

Keep activities relaxed and positive. Respond to your child's attempts to communicate and enjoy the conversation.
